The Big Goodbye is a story about a relationship between a bear (Big) and a raccoon (Small). One day Big goes out fishing and doesn't return. Small wonders if Big's disappearance could be their fault. Small goes through recognisable stages of grief missing Big, but ultimately Small draws on the happy memories they had together and finds the strength to move on alone. This story confronts loss and grief and familiar feelings children have around these topics. The story is meant to help children face the reality of losing a loved one. It does not resolve with a happy reunion between the two main characters, but the story has an uplifting ending.
